Rochester Lancers (16) vs. Norfolk Sharx (18)
Thursday, December 29, 2011 - 7:00 pm
Norfolk Scope Arena

Norfolk, VA – The Rochester Lancers (5-7) fell in heartbreaking fashion to the Norfolk SharX (1-9) by a score of 18-16. Gerson Dos Santos scored a three point goal in the final minute of action to give Norfolk their first win in franchise history over the visiting Lancers. Doug Miller had a four goal and eight point evening and Andrew Hoxie added seven points (2 2 point goals and 3 assists) for the Lancers who were missing the MISL’s second leading scorer in Mauricio Salles who sat out with a leg injury.

Doug Miller got the Lancers off to the quick start just 13 seconds in when he took the pass from Andrew Hoxie and then beat Norfolk goalkeeper Jamie Lieberman between his legs. Norfolk answered when Matthew Delicate was able to intercept a Patrick Hannigan clearance and put away the breakaway chance from three point range with almost nine minutes gone in the first quarter. Hannigan played a long ball into Hoxie who flicked it over the Norfolk backup keeper Brian Sowell to give the Lancers their second lead of the game at 4-3 after one quarter of play.

Just under three minutes into the second quarter, Miller scored his second of the match has he calmly finished his chance with his left foot. Norfolk scored next when Delicate set up Shaka Bangura for the goal that Rey Martinez felt he cleared off the line to make it 6-5 Lancers at the half.

Miller had the hat trick when he played a give and go with Hoxie as the goal pushed the Lancers lead to 8-5 early in the third quarter. Norfolk stayed in the game as William Yomby powered home a shot off a Gerson Dos Santos restart assist. Norfolk took their second lead of the game when Matt Clare’s three point shot eluded Hannigan and gave the SharX a 10-8 lead. The lead only lasted for thirty-five seconds as Hoxie was taken down on the breakaway and Miller converted the one on one shootout chance for his fourth goal of the game that leveled the game at ten points apiece. Dos Santos was able to put Norfolk back into the lead when his free kick went through the Lancer’s wall as the third quarter came to a close with Norfolk leading 12-10.

Norfolk took their largest lead of the game when Marcus Schmidt scored a three point goal twenty-eight seconds into the final quarter. Forty-seven seconds later, the Lancers pulled back to within three points when Jake Schindler played a pass off the end wall and to a streaking Jeremy Ortiz who touched it home to make it 15-12 Norfolk. The Lancers pulled to within a point as Hoxie got the ball to Brayton Knapp at the top of the arc and Knapp proceeded to beat four SharX to score his first of the game. Knapp then set up Hoxie for his second of the night as the long shot deflected off the Lancers forward to put Rochester back into the lead at 16-15 with just under four minutes remaining. With less than a minute to go, Dos Santos took a free kick from three point land that deflected off a Lancers defender for the winning tally. The Lancers had a tying goal go in just after the final whistle as the Norfolk SharX were able to get their first win in franchise history by an 18-16 score.
